BASIC METABOLIC PROFILE

The Basic Metabolic Profile (BMP) is composed of: Sodium, Potassium, Chloride, CO2 (bicarbonate), BUN, Creatinine, and Glucose. These tests help us understand renal function, fluid, & hydration status.

Sodium (Na): Gives and indication of renal function as well as some fluid & hydration status. It also indicates some endocrine function due to the hormones that can affect sodium retention and excretion. Typically, sodium is a better indicator of fluid status than sodium itself.

Potassium (K): Indicates renal function as well as potassium intake. Diuretics can lower serum potassium and require monitoring. ACE Inhibitors can elevate potassium levels. Some injuries and diseases can also affect potassium status.

Chloride (Cl): Indication of acid-base balance as well as respiratory status. It can help differentiate an acid-base problem from a fluid problem.

CO2: Related to the acid-base status

Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN):

Creatinine (Cr):

Glucose:
